Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here are the questions and solutions commonly encountered by users while using Mixstart.

Data Security

How do I back up my data?

To prevent data loss, regular backups are recommended:

  1. Go to Settings -> General Settings.
  2. Click the "Backup Data" button.
  3. Choose a safe location (such as drive D or a cloud sync directory) to save the backup file.

How do I migrate to a new computer?

  1. Perform a "Backup Data" operation on the old computer and copy the generated backup file to the new computer.
  2. Install Mixstart on the new computer.
  3. Enter Settings, click "Restore Data", and select the backup file you just brought over.

Performance

What if the software uses too much memory?

Mixstart is deeply optimized and typically has a very low footprint. If you find abnormal usage:

  1. Check if too many Desktop Widgets are enabled (especially those with dynamic refresh).
  2. Try enabling "Performance Mode" in settings (if available).
  3. Restarting the software usually releases accumulated memory cache.

Startup on boot failed?

  1. Please check if security software (like 360 or Huorong) has blocked Mixstart's startup item.
  2. Try running Mixstart as an administrator and then re-checking the "Auto-start on boot" option.

Starting from v3.1.6, Mixstart has refactored its search components from a built-in mode to an External Reuse mode. Please ensure:

  1. Everything is Installed: You need to have Everything installed on your computer.
  2. It is Running: Everything must be running in the background for Mixstart to connect via SDK.
  3. Instance Name: If you use 1.5 Alpha, ensure "Alpha Instance" mode is disabled (see Search Guide for details).

Q: How to support Portable Everything?

If you are using the portable (no-install) version of Everything, Mixstart's automatic detection might fail. In this case:

  1. Go to Settings -> General.
  2. After enabling "Global File Search", find "Everything Executable Path" below it and click "Select File" to manually select your Everything.exe.
  3. Restart Mixstart.

Q: What are the benefits of this refactoring?

  1. Zero Interference: Mixstart no longer runs an extra Everything process in the background, saving memory and indexing resources.
  2. Version Freedom: You can freely upgrade or change your Everything version.
  3. Smooth Upgrades: Completely resolves the "File Locked" errors during Mixstart updates caused by background Everything processes.

Other Issues

Why aren't website icons showing up?

  • Mixstart automatically fetches website icons, but some websites may fail to be retrieved due to network reasons.
  • You can right-click the bookmark card, select "Edit", and manually upload a local image as an icon.
